Teal & Magenta | A Journey of Inspiration Part 11

“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”
― Vincent van Gogh

Being gifted something handmade always makes you feel special – for it is unique, and a special message of care and love. Asma found Teals & Magenta to polish these skills and make unique items that I really found stunning and worth talking about here. I talked to her to know more on how she came to this idea.
Kay: Tell us a little about yourself

Asma: My name is aSma, I am a Syrian, French artist living in Dubai, UAE. I got a BA in Business Administration and studied 2D animation along with Marketing. I am currently preparing my master thesis in Marketing.

Kay: So where did it all start from?

Asma: It started since I watched my father painting when I was a kid. I wanted to do the same and started drawing whatever I saw. Then, I started crafting and doing collages all day long. My mother bought me a big jewelry making box when I was 7. I think I managed doing a bracelet after losing all the tiny pieces in that box.

Kay’s Tips: Inspiration can be acquired from a very young age. Always try to provide a creative environment around your kids so they learn the art of creation from early.

Kay: Tell us how did you get into jewellery designing?

Asma: I liked the idea of selling handmade products on Etsy. There are amazing artist out there. I thought, this is what I want to do! So I went to the jewelry supply stores in Syria and bought everything I liked: fabrics, beads, tools, glitters, zippers and gemstones. It didn’t make any sense at the time. I just bought what I loved.

Kay: Can you tell us a little more about the influence of your culture in your work?

Asma: Having visited 21 countries so far is where my inspiration and findings come from. I already have been in countries in the Middle East, Europe, North Africa and America. This constant change of my surroundings is one of the reasons behind the diversity of my jewelry designs. The other reason is that most of the materials I use in making my jewelry are findings from around the world. Some beads come from Burkina Faso, some laces and leather come from the streets of Paris and some gemstones are found in Istanbul.

Kay:  How would you define passion?
Asma: Passion is sleeping, waking up, cooking and sketching while thinking about the same thing.

Kay: What is your favourite work to-date and why?

Asma: My favorite work so far are the wire big earrings I did for the Atlantis Collection. It was the first piece where I decided to step out of my comfort zone.

Kay: How long does it normally take to complete a piece?

Asma: A piece can take one hour up to 4 days to make. Sometimes I stop working on something for one or two days trying to figure out a new idea to complete it.

Kay: Where do you get your ideas for pieces from?

Asma: The ideas start from the material I buy. I, for instance, go to a gemstones store and buy whatever I like; then on my way home, my mind starts sketching all the possibilities I can make with these stones. The final design is decided depending on time, budget and what can complete the designs already listed in my shop.

Kay’s Tips: For some reason, Pablo Picasso’s quote – “Everything you can imagine is real.” comes to my mind.

Kay: Do you remember the first piece of jewellery you created??

Asma: It was a blue satin flower necklace. I still renew it in my shop and hope I will keep making it in the future.

Kay: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Asma: We are all different. So be your self and try to make the best out of it.

Kay’s Tip: I totally agree with Asma. You can only be better than the person who you were yesterday!  That is the real challenge.
